The Tree (balance pose)

Maria Steiner, June 2024.

The Tree (balance pose)

Balance on one leg – the Tree pose
The balancing postures on one leg are mentally highly demanding. These postures develop, to the highest degree, the powers of mental concentration and single-mindedness of thought, as well as physical balance.
It also improves the muscle strength in the standing leg. Therefore always practice on both sides, even though usually one side is easier than the other.

Start with lifting the foot a little to stand on one leg. As the balance improves bring the leg up higher, all the way to half-lotus.

Another way to practice standing on one leg. Close your eyes  and count for how long you can stand on one leg, repeat on the other side.

Repeat, repeat, repeat. …….

sitting spinal twist

(literally Ardha stands for half = half spinal twist).

There are many benefits to this posture, but the most important is that the entire length of the spine receives a lateral twist in both directions – first to the left and then to the right.

Physical Benefits

  • Increases flexibility in each vertebrae of the spine, from the base of the spine through the neck
  • Stretches the back muscles and hips
  • Massages the abdominal organs, helping to relieve constipation
  • Breathing becomes more rapid, speeding up circulation and creating an aerobic effect
  • Brings more blood flow to the spine

Energetic (Pranic) Benefits

17 years Hatha Yoga Ipswich

Exactly 17 years ago today, on the Tuesday 31st of October 2006 at 6pm, I was teaching the first Yoga class here in Ipswich. It was the 6pm class on a Tuesday at the Scout Hall in Cameron Park, Booval. This specific class, day, time & location is still running today. Sometimes with 1 or 2 yogis joining the class, other times a full hall, and of course since three years always someone joining the class online via Zoom as well.

Of course there are and have been other yoga classes as well, at different locations, days & times. Always a continuous stream.

Thank you to each and everyone who ever chanted OM with me while joining a class. Thank you for your continues support and loyalty. Thanks & Blessings with all my heart, Maria Prema. OM OM OM
